Blue iPod

Cai has an equally deep love of music. His deep Welsh traditional roots and a university education have informed his musical taste. When he meets John, Cai’s musical experience is stretched to encompass many more genres.

Welsh Music

The druid community in HMS Conway is held together by an ancient pagan calendar. Superlative music-making is essential in these festivities, and a huge amount of leisure time is spent in practice, with Nia taking the lead.

Irish Music

Diarmud has a love of traditional Gaelic folk music, and sea shanties in particular.

They are sleeping on the boats now
To be ready for the flood,
For the flood they know is coming
To lift them from the mud.
For the flood they know is coming
To wash their fears away,
They are sleeping on the boats now
To be ready for that day.

Ten million stars float on the water

Ten thousand trees stand on the fell

A hundred knights sleep in the darkness

A single word to break the spell

We are sleeping in the trees now
To save them for that day,
For that day we know is coming
To carry worlds away.
For that day we know is coming
To teach us what is good,
We are sleeping in the trees now
To keep faith with the wood.

Ten million stars float on the water

Ten thousand trees stand on the fell

A hundred knights sleep in the darkness

A single word to break the spell

He is sleeping by the fire now
To keep away the cold,
The cold he knows is coming
To claim what he has sold.
The cold he knows is coming
To take his breath away,
He is sleeping by the fire now
Until the shining day.

Ten million stars float on the water

Ten thousand trees stand on the fell

A hundred knights sleep in the darkness

A single word to break the spell

It is sleeping in the words now
The mem’ry of this life,
This life we know is slender
And bladed like a knife.
This life we know is fragile
And speeding fast away.
It is sleeping in the words now
The echo of this day.

Ten million stars float on the water

Ten thousand trees stand on the fell

A hundred knights sleep in the darkness

A single word to break the spell

The Music

Music is an integral part of Hiraeth. A deep love of music is common to many of the characters, and all genres of music permeate the relationships between the key protagonists.

Pink mp3

Mona’s brother, Idwal, gave her a pink iPod on her seventeenth birthday. It was full of the music of their childhood – a mixture of her mother’s country, her father’s rock, Idwal’s pop, and Mona’s thrashing guitars. The mp3 player is the only link Mona has to the people she loved, and the colour has worn away with constant use.
